Email Marketing 101

What is Email Marketing?

Email marketing is the use of emails to promote yourself or your company. Email marketing is a segment of internet marketing. It can be used in a variety of ways including to send informative newsletters, exclusive promotions or sales, or other messages from the company. Email marketing allows the company to tailor their message to the audience receiving it, and provide up-to-date information to their customers.

Why is Email Marketing Important?

With the increase in popularity of social media, many companies choose to focus solely on social platforms, but there is statistical evidence that email marketing remains effective and relevant.

Email marketing is important because it can be a significant source of sales and can create brand loyalty. When individuals are subscribing to your newsletter or your marketing emails, they are choosing to receive communication from you or your company. This means they are more likely to spend time reading or engaging with the content you email them.

Another reason email marketing may be beneficial over social media is because there is no guarantee that your audience on social media will see your post if they do not use the app the day that you make a post. However, an email remains in the inbox unread until they decide to check it, no matter how many days it’s been since the email was sent.

Email Marketing Strategies

1. Build an Audience

The most important part of creating your email marketing strategy is building an audience. A great place to start is to add an accessible subscribe option on your website! Once you have done this, you can promote the newsletter on your social media. Having a consistent company newsletter is a great way to build a cohesive brand image and can be a great talking point at networking events.

2. Keep the Messages Interesting

Keeping your audience engaged is essential to maintaining and building your email marketing audience. Try to mix up the message in each email to keep it fresh and to avoid sounding repetitive!

3. Follow a Schedule

Following a schedule is a great way to hold yourself accountable when beginning your journey with email marketing. It’s also beneficial for your audience because they know what to expect when signing up! Whether you send your newsletter once a week or once a month, consistency is key!

4. Respect Your Subscribers

This tip goes along with following a schedule. A big risk of email marketing is the potential to annoy your subscribers with too many emails. You want to avoid coming across as spam. Instead, your messages should be beneficial to your audience and shouldn’t flood their inbox.

5. Optimize for Mobile

Optimizing your emails for mobile is very important! People are busy and on-the-go all the time. There’s a good chance that your emails will be opened on a mobile device rather than a desktop. You want your emails to look correct and professional regardless of which device they are viewed on!
