Minimalism 101: Heather Barta

Today on the podcast, we are joined by Heather Barta to talk about living a minimal lifestyle. Heather has a staging business, Ollie Design Co., and she works with a real estate team to declutter and stage homes, and get them ready to sell!

Heather jumps into how she got started in her journey of minimalism at 0:38. She talks about how you accumulate so many things in your home, and there always comes a time where you run out of storage, or you don’t know where to find things. At some point, you’re going to need to start getting rid of some of the things that you don’t use. When Heather made the decision to pursue a minimalistic lifestyle, the first thing she did was get rid of half of her children’s toys! At 4:36, she reveals how that went over with her 3 boys, and how they were able to manage it.

Many of us can relate to having lots of clothes that we rarely (if ever) wear. Listen at 6:10 to hear Heather’s rule of thumb for getting rid of clothes!

I think people feel bad getting rid of things because they spent money on it. But the money is already spent, so you just have to let it go and use it as a learning lesson.

Home décor is another thing that people spend a lot of money on and may change frequently. At 8:34, Heather talks about how she’s able to be minimalistic with her home décor!

At 13:45 Heather begins to discuss how being minimal with home décor has helped her add value for her clients while working in the real estate industry! Heather shares one of the most important rules that she follows when decluttering homes and getting them ready to sell at 14:34.

Heather answers the question of how she declutters her kitchen at 17:11!

Listen to some of Heather’s tips on where to donate or sell your things at 25:14.

Being content with what you already have can be very challenging for people, especially in today’s day and age. Tune in at 26:27 to hear how Heather was able to develop that mindset in order to live a minimal life.

We learned so much from our conversation with Heather, and we received so many tangible tips for how we can incorporate minimalism into our own lives! This lifestyle is a great way to reduce stress and anxiety and to free up your time. We hope you love this episode as much as we do!
